Chapter 22: Liz

While Bernie and Mary were living their best lives dealing with a murder inquiry in Glasgow, Liz was getting lower back pain from being hunched over her laptop all day. No matter what she tried or where she looked, there seemed to be no sign of Marty Gortat. It was looking more and more likely that Gortat wasn’t even his real name. She had asked Mary if Walker could take a look and see if the man had a police record, but even if he wanted to help, they were far too busy with the murder of Tiana Schmidt. No one from the Renfrewshire Polish group had got back to her yet and she was running low on options.

And there was the temptation of the allegations that Linda had made about the car crash. They had no relation to the Kaylie/Ryan wedding, but Liz found herself constantly wishing she was investigating that case instead.

She let out a low groan when another ‘M Gortat’ on social media turned out to be the wrong age for her quarry.

“Something the matter?” Dave poked his head around the door. He had started a new partner in his Optician’s business a month ago so that he had more time at home. If Liz was honest, she was finding his constant presence in her formerly quiet house more than a little irritating.

“Just a work thing being a nightmare.”

He came over and perched on the arm of the sofa. “Would it help if you talked it through with me?”

Liz raised an eyebrow. “You don’t normally ask about my cases.”

“Because you don’t normally look so defeated,” Dave said. “I mean, since you quit your old job, it’s like you can’t wait to get to your laptop. I’ve never seen you so excited about something as when you joined the WWC. So it’s kind of unusual to see you sighing and moping around.”

For Dave, who wasn’t the most emotional of men, this was quite a long speech, so Liz sat up and considered her reply.

“It’s not even really a case,” she explained. “Just a personal obsession of someone connected to another case. And I should be spending my time on the one that we’re actually getting paid for.”

“But this other problem is on your mind?”

She nodded. “If Linda Novak is correct then someone has got away with murder.”

“And you can’t just let that go?”

Liz’s mouth turned down at the corners. “Do you think I should?”

Her husband bent down and gave her an awkward hug. “No. Look, I know sometimes I drive you crazy because I don’t plan things, or I don’t worry about the future, or think about the big questions, all that stuff.”

“It doesn’t drive me crazy,” Liz lied.

Dave chuckled. “Sure. But the reason I don’t worry about any of that stuff is because I know that you’ll take care of it. And maybe that makes me a weak beta male or something, but that’s the way it is. I trust your judgement and I know that you’ll make the right decision, no matter what the circumstances are.
